Geography highlights

Canada :

  • occupies most of the northern part of North America

  • is the second largest country with an area of 9 984 670 km2;

  • has about 32 million inhabitants.

Canada is bordered by three oceans: the Atlantic to the East, the Pacific to the west and the Arctic in the North.

More than 7000 km separate the city of Halifax in Nova Scotia on the East coast from Whitehorse in the Yukon territory, near Canada's border with Alaska, in the North West.

Canada shares with the USA the longest peaceful border between two countries: a total of 8893 km , 5061 km of which are on land.

On this immense territory contrasting landscapes succeed one another:

  • From the forests and tortuous coastlines of the Atlantic Provinces...

  • ...to the Appalachian Mountains reaching across the fertile lands of the St-Laurence Valley...

  • ...and the Great Lakes regions overlapping Ontario and several of the USA's northern states, with the world renowned Niagara Falls straddling Canada's border with the State of New York ...

  • followed by Canada's granaries in the fertile great plains of Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta....

  • bordered in its western flank by the tall snowy Rocky Mountains....

  • ....on the other side of which lies British Columbia with its tropical forests and world renowned vinyards, its western border reaching to the Pacific Ocean....

  • and all across the northern part Canada the Tundra, followed by the magnetic north Pole in the immense Nunavut territory.
