One of the main requirements the sponsor must meet is the signing of an undertaking agreement. Under such an undertaking, the sponsor commits in writing to financially support the family members being sponsored during a certain period of time after their admission in Canada as permanent residents.
Generally, sponsors must prove that they have the financial means to support their dependent family members already living in Canada with them as well as the person they wish to sponsor and their own dependent family members, whether these accompany them to Canada or not.
The undertaking varies in duration depending on the family relationship between the sponsor and the person being sponsored to Canada.
Such an undertaking is a contract between the sponsor and the government: during the time period in which it is in force, sponsored family members are not allowed to receive any income support from the government.
The sponsor would be liable to reimburse the government for any support received by a sponsored family member such as last resort income assistance or special assistance (for instance eye glasses, dental care or hearing aids) paid for by government.
